Advances, challenges, and environmental impacts in metal–air battery electrolytes

Efficient energy storage technologies are vital in the current efforts towards decarbonisation. Batteries, as one of most versatile electrochemical systems, have potential to shape transition from climate crisis scenario a carbon neutral and sustainable future. In particular, metal–air batteries gaining scientific industrial interest promising contenders ubiquitous lithium-ion batteries. The electrolyte plays critical role it determines battery performance, its safety operating lifespan. low-density, ease processing, good thermal stability, mechanically stiff but ductile character, electrically insulating properties tailor-made chemistry make polymers singularly interesting be applied separator/liquid pair, gel-electrolytes or solid-electrolytes. Accordingly, this work bottlenecks challenges presented, with particular emphasis on design. implementation aqueous liquid electrolytes, organic polymer membranes soaked gel-like electrolytes solid-state is discussed environmental impacts associated analysed within Circular Economy perspective.
